Poul Cadovius is widely recognised as one of the most significant and influential figures in the
history of Danish furniture design. His career began not in design, but in craftsmanship—he was
originally trained as a saddle maker and upholsterer. However, his interest soon turned toward
furniture design, where he would make a lasting impact on the field.
In 1945, Cadovius took a decisive step in this direction by founding his own furniture
manufacturing company, Royal System. Just three years later, in 1948, he introduced what
would become one of his most celebrated creations: the ROYAL SYSTEM®. This innovative
shelving concept broke with traditional furniture design by utilizing a wall-mounted structure,
allowing furniture to be lifted off the floor and thereby freeing up valuable floor space.
Building on the success of this design, Cadovius continued to explore the possibilities of
modular and space-efficient furniture. In 1957, he launched the SYSTEM ULTRA®, which was
met with critical acclaim and went on to win several awards. This was followed in 1960 by the
introduction of the SYSTEM CADO®, further refining his vision of functional, elegant, and
flexible living spaces.
Through these pioneering designs, Cadovius redefined how furniture interacts with architectural
space. His work not only reflected the principles of modernist design—simplicity, utility, and
beauty—but also contributed to a broader shift toward more adaptable and space-conscious
living environments. Today, his systems remain enduring symbols of Danish design innovation
and are still celebrated for their timeless appeal.
